The Ministry of Civil Aviation has introduced DigiYatra, a user-friendly mobile application aimed at enhancing the air travel experience within India. This innovative app simplifies the airport journey by offering contactless and paperless solutions.  It provides a convenient and technology-driven approach for travellers to register, access services, and enjoy a more streamlined journey through major airports across the country. What is Digi-Yatra ?

DigiYatra is a system that uses Facial Recognition Technology to create a smooth and paperless travel experience for passengers. This technology allows passengers to automatically processed at different points in the airport, including entry, security checks, and boarding, just by using their face as their identification.

Previous Information Regarding Digi Yatra :

  • DigiYatra was created by a startup called Dataevolve Solutions in Hyderabad, which was chosen through a national startup challenge by NITI Aayog under Atal Innovation Mission (AIM).
  • The initial launch of DigiYatra took place on December 1, 2022, in Bangalore and Varanasi under the guidance of civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.
  • By April 2023, DigiYatra’s services expanded to include Vijayawada, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Pune airports.
  • In June 2023, Delhi Airport’s Terminal 3 (T3) allowed passengers to use DigiYatra within the airport premises without needing the DigiYatra mobile application.
  • During the same month, DigiYatra announced that their service had reached one million users.
  • In August 2023, the DigiYatra system was implemented at Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.

Goal & Functions of Digi Yatra:

  • DigiYatra was launched to enhance convenience, efficiency, and security for air travelers by utilizing biometric technology like facial recognition for identity verification at different checkpoints.
  • The system eliminates the need for physical documents at check-in, security, and boarding gates, streamlining the verification process.
  • Passengers can use their unique digital identities, such as Aadhaar cards or passports, to seamlessly book flights, reducing the necessity for multiple physical documents.
  • The initiative also includes specific queues and check-ins at the 8 participating airports for DigiYatra app users, aiming to improve passenger convenience and reduce waiting times.
  • The goal of DigiYatra is to simplify the booking process and enhance overall efficiency in air travel.

Target Airports and Target Users

The new process is designed to serve all passengers at any airport in India, including Indian citizens with or without a DigiYatra ID and foreign nationals. The aim is to equally simplify and streamline the passenger process for various passenger types, including first-time and frequent flyers in India, group travelers and families, as well as foreign citizens or tourists.

Accessing the Digi Yatra App 

  1. To avail the DigiYatra facility, passengers are required to download the app, which was launched on August 15 by the Prime Minister of India.
  2. Upon downloading, passengers need to register their phone number and Aadhar card details, take a selfie, add vaccination information, and scan their boarding pass.
  3. The use of DigiYatra is voluntary, and passengers’ biometric details are securely stored on their mobile devices, ensuring safety and privacy. 

Registration on the Digi Yatra App :

1. Download the DigiYatra App from either the Google Play Store or the App Store.

2. Open the app and click on ‘Get Started’ to begin the registration process.

3. Enter your mobile number and click ‘Register’.

4. You will receive a One-Time Password (OTP) on your registered mobile number; enter the OTP.

5. Access the ‘Wallet’ option at the bottom of the screen.

6. Select “Identity Credentials” at the bottom of the screen and upload your Aadhaar-verified documents.

7. Take a selfie as prompted and review the terms and conditions to complete the registration process.

Identity Documents for DigiYatra ID Travel Credential :

For registering for a Digi Yatra ID, passengers can utilise the following Govt. of India issued Photo Identity Cards (Not exhaustive)

  • AADHAAR ID: Fully self-service
  • Driving License: Fully self-service
  • Passport: Requires manual validation at the airport registration kiosk
  • PAN: Requires manual validation at the airport registration kiosk
  • Voter ID: Requires manual validation at the airport registration kiosk
  • Student ID: Requires manual validation at the airport registration kiosk

Re-creation of Digi Yatra ID

a. If a passenger changes their smartphone, they can re-create the Digi Yatra ID Travel Credentials based on the original enrollment process.

b. In the event of a passenger changing their smartphone, there is a possibility of transferring the DY-ID credentials from one phone to another.

c. This process will integrated into the Digi Yatra App to eliminate the need for re-enrollment.

What is the flow of the Registration Process ?

1. First the passenger consents to use the Biometrics for the ‘Day of Travel’

2. Then the passenger scans Boarding Pass/ Mobile QR Code at the Kiosk

3. Boarding pass gets validated with Airline DCS.

4. Kiosk captures the Face biometrics

5. Passenger then shows the Physical ID document to CISF security officer

6. Once satisfied with the ID document, CISF accepts the passenger on the Tablet

 7. Single token biometric registered for the Day of Travel,

8. Finally the passenger proceeds to the airport entry gates.

  5. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata

This initiative aims to revolutionise the air travel experience by leveraging technology to offer a more efficient and hassle-free journey for passengers at these key airports. It is also currently aiming to expand its foot prints across other major airports in India and go international. Currently the app is not functional internationally.
