IPL 2025 Retained Players List

The Chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council has confirmed that the ‘Mega Auction’ is scheduled to occur in 2025. Held once every three years, this auction allows teams to overhaul their team composition significantly. Details regarding the date and venue for the mega auction remain undisclosed and will be announced by the BCCI at a later time.

KKR won the IPL 2024 Trophy by 8 wickets against SRH which held on 26 May 2024 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

IPL 2025 Retained Players List :

A. Royal Challengers Bengaluru

Contenders: Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar, Mohammed Siraj, Cameron Green, Glenn Maxwell, Will Jacks

  • Retention Strategy:
    • First Retention: Virat Kohli would be retained.
    • Second Retention: Skipper Faf du Plessis may not be retained, given that he will be 40 by the next season.
    • Glenn Maxwell: Likely to be released due to age and a poor 2024 season (52 runs in nine innings) along with his hefty price tag.
  • Remaining Three Spots:
    • Option 1: Retain three Indian players: Patidar and Siraj, with a choice between Cameron Green and Will Jacks.
    • Option 2: Retain both Green and Jacks, but then choose between Patidar and Siraj.

Deciding on the final spots is challenging due to the unique contributions of each player. Siraj is one of India’s premier pace bowlers, making him a valuable asset. Patidar and Jacks have been standout middle-order batters in the 2024 season. Green, a long-term prospect, was traded for INR 17.5 crore. Balancing immediate performance and future potential will be key to RCB’s strategy.

B. Kolkata Knight Riders

Contenders: Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Shreyas Iyer, Rinku Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Venkatesh Iyer

  • Definite Retentions:
    • Sunil Narine
    • Andre Russell
  • Likely Retention:
    • Shreyas Iyer: Although Iyer, the current captain, has not met expectations (average 33.9, strike rate 139.7) over three seasons, his experience in leadership makes him a valuable asset. Many teams would be interested in an Indian player with captaincy experience, increasing the likelihood of his retention.
  • Remaining Spots:
    • Varun Chakaravarthy: Despite his brilliance in recent seasons, the presence of Narine, a similar type of spinner, complicates his retention.
    • Venkatesh Iyer: His reduced bowling usage diminishes his retention chances, as his secondary skill was previously a deciding factor over Shubman Gill in 2022.
    • Rinku Singh: Despite an underwhelming 2024 season, Rinku Singh is a significant player from the KKR setup in this cycle. His potential as an Indian finisher is invaluable, which might lead to his retention over Varun and Venkatesh Iyer.

KKR management faces a tough decision, balancing the need for experienced players and emerging talents to form a competitive squad for the next season.

C. Delhi Capitals

Contenders: Rishabh Pant, Kuldeep Yadav, Tristan Stubbs, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Axar Patel

Delhi Capitals face a tough decision with five strong contenders and the possibility of retaining only four players. Here’s a breakdown of their options:

  • First-Choice Indian Players:
    • Rishabh Pant (captain)
    • Kuldeep Yadav (India’s premier spinner)
    • Axar Patel
  • Breakout Stars of 2024:
    • Tristan Stubbs
    • Jake Fraser-McGurk

Releasing any of these players into the auction of IPL 2025 could lead to significant bids, especially for Stubbs and Fraser-McGurk, who had standout performances in 2024.

  • Retention Scenarios:
    • Three Indian Players, One Overseas: If DC retain three Indians, Stubbs might be preferred for his finishing abilities, addressing a historical weakness for Delhi.
    • Two Overseas Players: If allowed two overseas retentions, both Stubbs and Fraser-McGurk could be kept, potentially leaving Axar Patel out despite his importance.

Ideally, if the retention rules permit five players with two overseas and three Indians, DC’s management would find it much easier to keep their core team intact.

D. Punjab Kings

Contenders: Sam Curran, Arshdeep Singh, Shashank Singh, Ashutosh Sharma

  • Historical Retention Trends:
    • PBKS often heads into auctions with few or no retentions.
    • They had a clean slate in 2011 and 2018.
    • In 2014 and 2022, they retained only two players each.
  • Possible Clean Slate:
    • With no qualifications in the current auction cycle, there is a strong chance PBKS might go for a clean slate again.
    • However, four players are worth considering for retention:
      • Arshdeep Singh: Premier pacer and India international, though his form has been inconsistent.
      • Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma: Breakout stars of 2024, likely to attract high bids if released.
      • Sam Curran: Most probable retention due to his all-around abilities among the overseas players.

Ultimately, PBKS has the flexibility to decide their retention strategy, with the ball firmly in their court.

E. Rajasthan Royals

Contenders: Sanju Samson, Riyan Parag, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jos Buttler, Trent Boult, Shimron Hetmyer

  • Impact of Mega Auction:
    • Rajasthan Royals will be significantly affected due to their roster of consistent players.
    • Ideally, they would prefer to retain their entire squad.
  • Potential Retentions:
    • Sanju Samson: Likely their first choice as a premier Indian batter, wicketkeeper, and captain.
    • Jos Buttler: A valuable overseas batter.
  • Other Retention-worthy Players:
    • Yashasvi Jaiswal: An all-format player for India.
    • Riyan Parag: On the verge of an India debut.
  • Retention Challenges:
    • Retaining Jaiswal and Parag might result in a lack of variety as both are batters.
    • Bowling Options:
      • Yuzvendra Chahal: The highest wicket-taker in IPL history.
      • Trent Boult: A top powerplay bowler.
  • Strategic Decisions:
    • Likely to retain Samson, Buttler, Chahal, and one between Jaiswal and Parag.
    • Plan to re-sign the remaining key players in the auction.

F. Sunrisers Hyderabad :

Contenders: Pat Cummins, Travis Head, Heinrich Klaasen, Abhishek Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Nitish Kumar Reddy

  • Retention Dilemma:
    • SRH, like RR, has more retention-worthy players than available spots.
    • The first task is to confirm Pat Cummins’ availability for the next IPL season. If he returns, he will be retained as the captain.
  • Overseas Player Decisions:
    • If Cummins returns, SRH will face a tough decision between Heinrich Klaasen and Travis Head.
    • If Cummins does not return, Klaasen and Head are straightforward retentions.
  • Indian Player Spots:
    • Abhishek Sharma: Certain to be retained.
    • Final Indian Spot Options:
      • Bhuvneshwar Kumar: Long-time team member since 2013, with an economy of 9.1 and 11 wickets in 14 matches.
      • T Natarajan: Best bowler of the season with an economy of 9.1.
      • Nitish Kumar Reddy: Emerging star of the season and a seam-bowling all-rounder.
  • Strategic Approach :
    • SRH may attempt to re-sign Bhuvneshwar, Natarajan, and Reddy in the auction.
    • Likely to proceed with only three retentions ahead of the mega auction.

G. Chennai Super Kings

Contenders: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Matheesha Pathirana, Tushar Deshpande

  • Indian Retentions:
    • With the expected retirement of MS Dhoni after this season, CSK will likely retain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube, and Ravindra Jadeja as their core Indian players.
  • Overseas Retention:
    • Matheesha Pathirana will be considered a key retention as the leader of their pace attack.
  • Other Considerations:
    • While there might be discussions about retaining Tushar Deshpande, CSK may opt to re-buy him in the auction due to retention constraints.
  • If Dhoni Continues:
    • If Dhoni decides to continue playing, the decision between retaining Dube or Jadeja becomes more complicated.

H. Lucknow Super Giants

Contenders: KL Rahul, Nicholas Pooran, Marcus Stoinis, Mayank Yadav, Ravi Bishnoi, Mohsin Khan, Ayush Badoni

  • Definite Retentions:
    • Marcus Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran have been crucial for LSG this season and are likely to be retained.
  • Indian Player Retentions:
    • The franchise faces a dilemma with the two Indian retention spots.
    • There have been speculations about KL Rahul’s future with LSG following a visible disagreement between him and the team’s owner, Sanjiv Goenka, after a heavy defeat to SRH. Rahul, who left Punjab after the 2021 season, might seek new opportunities with other teams looking for captains in the mega auction. Hence, he may not be retained by LSG.
  • Young Fast Bowlers:
    • LSG has nurtured two promising fast bowlers, Mohsin Khan and Mayank Yadav. Both have shown potential but have also struggled with injuries. Mohsin has performed well over three seasons despite injuries, and Mayank emerged as a star in 2024 with two Player of the Match awards in his first two games.
  • Spin-Friendly Conditions:
    • Considering the spin-friendly conditions at their home ground, retaining a spinner makes sense. However, Ravi Bishnoi, their main spinner, has not been very effective, with 39 wickets in 43 matches. Ayush Badoni is also a strong contender as an Indian finisher.
  • Final Decision:
    • If Rahul stays with LSG, they can only retain one of the young players they have developed. There is also a possibility that LSG might release all their Indian players and start afresh.

At present, Nicholas Pooran and Marcus Stoinis appear to be the only definite retentions for LSG.

I. Gujarat Titans

Contenders: Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, Mohammed Shami, David Miller, Rashid Khan, Rahul Tewatia, Noor Ahmad

  • Speculative Moves:
    • There are speculations that Gujarat might part ways with Shubman Gill, who had an underwhelming season both as a batter and a first-time captain.
    • Additionally, Rashid Khan has been linked with Mumbai’s sister franchises in other leagues, suggesting he might want to join Mumbai Indians. If he decides to enter the auction, he will be a highly sought-after player.
  • Definite Retentions:
    • If Rashid and Gill are not retained, the other two likely retentions are David Miller and Mohammed Shami. Both players were pivotal to Gujarat’s success in 2022 and 2023. The absence of Shami was particularly felt in 2024 when the team finished eighth.
  • Additional Contenders:
    • Rahul Tewatia, known for his remarkable finishing abilities, is another strong candidate for retention due to his consistent performance in crucial situations.
    • Sai Sudharsan has shown potential and could be considered a second version of Gill, making him a valuable player for the team.
    • Noor Ahmad, despite a mixed 2024 season, was a key match-winner in 2023. As a rare left-arm wrist-spinner, he stands a good chance of being retained if Rashid leaves.
  • Final Decision:
    • Gujarat has a deep pool of players they wish to retain or buy back in the auction. Ultimately, the retention strategy will depend on discussions between the management, Gill, and Rashid.

In summary, Gujarat’s retention plans hinge on the decisions of Shubman Gill and Rashid Khan, with other key players like Miller, Shami, Tewatia, Sudharsan, and Noor Ahmad being strong contenders for retention.

J. Mumbai Indians :

Contenders: Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma, Tilak Varma, Tim David

Mumbai Indians are currently facing some internal challenges and speculations:

  • Rumors and Speculations:
    • There are rumors that Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah were displeased with Hardik Pandya being appointed captain upon his return, which might affect their willingness to accept retention slots.
    • Additionally, there is speculation that the final league game of this season might have been Rohit Sharma’s last home IPL game at the Wankhede, indicating possible retirement.
  • Ideal Retentions:
    • Ideally, Mumbai would want to retain three Indian players: Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, and Suryakumar Yadav, along with one overseas player, possibly Tim David.
  • Contingency Plans:
    • If any of their key players are unwilling to be retained, Tilak Varma is a strong candidate who would come into consideration.

In summary, Mumbai Indians aim to retain Hardik, Bumrah, and Surya, with Tim David as a potential overseas retention. However, if internal issues prevent this, Tilak Varma is likely to be included in their plans.
